Godly Play is a curriculum of spiritual practice exploring the mystery of God’s presence in our lives. Godly Play practice teaches children to listen for God and to make authentic and creative responses to God’s call in their lives.
Building Faith Brick by Brick eEngages children with multiple learning styles using a familiar medium―LEGO® bricks! Building Faith Brick by Brick offers a hands-on way to explore faith stories with a broad range of ages. It grew out of one congregation’s realization that there was a large group of first-grade boys who needed to engage in a new way of interacting with the biblical story. Knowing how much Lego® bricks continue to be popular with children, the author dug deep into the well of creativity and an enormous bin of little plastic building bricks to meld together a new way of teaching the stories of God.
Journey to Adulthood has an underlying three-part structure: Spirituality, Society, and Self. These reflect the Christian call to love God and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Lessons are a combination of learning about the Christian faith through this lens of love for God, others, and self, and putting that faith into action. In each level youth are introduced to different spiritual practices. Each level also has opportunities for youth to serve their local community in a meaningful way. This program gives youth the space to explore questions of faith rather than a set of right answers. The resources of the Christian tradition—the Scriptures, the Creeds, the lives of the saints, and more—serve as clear guides along the way. Yet we know that Christian faith from its earliest days has been marked by diversity and that the Spirit of God calls each of us to unique roles in Christ’s Church. Journey to Adulthood provides for faithful inquiry, as youth explore what Christians believe and what it means for them to belong to the Body of Christ, as they are given the opportunity and the tools necessary to make faith their own.
In the Episcopal tradition, Baptism is a full entry into the community of Christ's followers, and all baptized persons may receive communion. Many families, however, wish for their children to have further instruction in the Holy Eucharist (Communion) before their child receives communion. Our First Communion class, which offers instruction on the theology and practice of communion, is held each spring before the Bishop's visit. It is open to all children, whether they have already been receiving communion or not. Contact a member of the clergy for more details.
There are several special programs and events through the year, including Walk to Easter (a dramatic walk through holy week for children and youth), Vacation Bible School, various service projects, Youth Sunday, and a Christmas Pageant. See the Annual Educational Events page for more details.
